[Würselen, 09.04.2024] – PicoLAS GmbH, in collaboration with the Feuerwehr Achim Ortsfeuerwehr Embsen (Achim Fire Department, Embsen Local Fire Brigade), conducted a groundbreaking test as part of the BMBF-Innovationsforum “Zivile Sicherheit” (BMBF Innovation Forum “Civil Security”).

Under the leadership of Dr. Markus Bartram, Andreas Klaus and Thomas Bodnar, the project Sicheres Schadstoffmonitoring per UAS in Gefahrenszenarien für Einsatzkräfte (SiSchaMo) successfully tested an innovative Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) for hazardous material monitoring.

The test, conducted on private property with a controlled fire incident, showcased the capabilities of the UAS in real-life operational scenarios. The drone was deployed to the site of the incident, and took an air sample through the sensor from the environment. Subsequently, it transmits real-time data through a robust communication channel to a designated ground station for immediate analysis and safely transported itself back.

“This project marks a significant advancement in the capabilities of emergency responders,” stated Dr. Markus Bartram, CEO of PicoLAS GmbH and lead researcher on the SiSchaMo project. “Our aim is to enhance the safety of rescue and security personnel by minimizing their exposure to potentially life-threatening situations.”

Over the years, the tasks of fire brigades and emergency responders have evolved, with an increasing number of incidents involving unknown substances, particularly on highways and industrial sites. The SiSchaMo project seeks to address this challenge by developing and testing a reliable, airworthy, multimodal sensor platform specifically designed for the rapid detection of pollutants and hazardous substances in operational scenarios.

The successful test of the SiSchaMo project represents a significant step forward in ensuring the safety and efficiency of emergency response operations. With further research and development, this innovative solution promises to redefine the standards of hazardous material monitoring in operational settings.
